With reference to my Confidential despatch
of the 24th July, I have the honour to report the further
course of events in connection with the strike.

The situation as regards the peace and good order of the Colony calls for little comment. A small bomb
was recently thrown into the compound of the Yaumati Police Station, but fortunately it failed to explode. There was
a case of stone throwing at the lecturer referred to in the third paragraph of my last despatch, and two men concerned were promptly arrested by General Leung's men. A number of street searches have been undertaken with the assistance of the Military, a given area being closed and guarded by soldiers while the Police thoroughly search
every house and person within the area. These searches
serve a most useful purpose in checking the activities of undesirables. The results have so far been negative as regards the finding of arms, but a number of persons unable to give a satisfactory account of themselves have been arrested and deported to Canton. The Reserve Company of the Volunteers were excused duty from the 18th July, half the remainder were allowed to go on the 27th July, and the force was finally demobilized on the 5th August.
